Ubisoft seems intent on upholding its protagonists' morals, or is at least trying to keep some semblance of Assassin's Creed in the modern open world iterations. The first tenet is, " stay your blade from the flesh of an innocent." Although recent titles have focused on main characters who aren't Assassins, the inability to kill civilians without repercussions remains. When Altaïr is stripped of his rank in the Assassin Brotherhood near the beginning of the game, the Assassin leader Al Mualim sees fit to remind Altaïr of the Brotherhood's Creed, which is primarily composed of three tenets. This mechanic has been in the series since the very first Assassin's Creed, in which the rationale behind it is explained to both the player and protagonist Altaïr. Attacking civilians will result in the game displaying a message warning that further civilian casualties will cause a desynchronization with the Animus, the machine allowing the modern day protagonist relive the memories of an ancestor or person of interest. The Assassin's Creedseries, in contrast with many other open world games, does not allow the player to kill innocent civilians.
